HFA at the 17th National Paediatric Bioethics Conference: Advocating for Ethical Care and Inclusion

Earlier this September, Hemispherectomy Foundation Australia (HFA) proudly attended the 17th National Paediatric Bioethics Conference held at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. This prestigious event brought together clinicians, ethicists, researchers, and advocates from across Australia to explore the ethical dimensions of paediatric healthcare, with this year’s theme focusing on “Working Through Ethical Challenges: From Theory to Practice.”

For HFA, the conference was a powerful opportunity to amplify the voices of families impacted by hemispherectomy surgery – a rare but life-changing procedure for children with drug-resistant epilepsy. Our presence highlighted the unique ethical considerations surrounding informed consent, long-term care, and the psychosocial support required for children undergoing such profound neurological interventions.

Watch our conference video below:

The video captures key moments from the event, including our conversations with healthcare professionals, reflections from families, and the importance of ethical collaboration in shaping better outcomes for children living with severe epilepsy.

Why Bioethics Matters to HFA

Bioethics is not just a theoretical discipline – it’s a practical framework that guides real decisions affecting real lives. For families navigating the hemispherectomy journey, ethical clarity is essential. From pre-surgical counselling to post-operative rehabilitation, every step involves complex choices that must be made with compassion, transparency, and respect.

By participating in this conference, HFA continues its mission to:

• Advocate for ethical and inclusive healthcare practices.

• Ensure families are supported not only medically, but emotionally and socially.

• Collaborate with clinicians and researchers to improve outcomes for children undergoing hemispherectomy.

Looking Ahead

We’re grateful to the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Bioethics Centre for hosting such a thoughtful and inclusive event. HFA looks forward to continuing these vital conversations and contributing to a healthcare system that truly understands and supports the needs of our community.
