Freya's Story
After an uneventful, normal developing childhood, Freya began experiencing seizures on a family holiday at age six.
This marked the start of a long journey through diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately life-changing surgery that gave Freya the chance to thrive.
The Cause
From healthy childhood to relentless seizures before she turned six.
Seizures initially responded to anti-epileptic medication; however, they returned after six months. This pattern continued for the next two years, with different seizure types and various medications being tried.

The Turning Point: Diagnosis at Age Nine
MRIs showed progressive atrophy in her right hemisphere, and a diagnosis of Rasmussen’s Encephalitis was definitively made at age nine. The next 18 months were a blur of treatments and frequent hospitalisations.
Action
The Surgery That Changed Everything
At age 11, Freya underwent a hemispherectomy. Instead of a life overshadowed by Rasmussen’s Encephalitis and constant hospitalisations, the hemispherectomy gave Freya the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive beyond her diagnosis.
Hope
Achieving dreams beyond the diagnosis.
Since then, Freya has defied all expectations. She completed school, earned a Master’s in Speech Pathology, and now works full-time helping others. Freya lives independently and enjoys a fulfilling life, turning her experience into a source of hope for families facing similar challenges.
